More Commercials That Reinforce Gender Stereotypes

Linking to a recent Payless commercial for Easter. Try to read between the lines.

(I haven’t been able to embed the video, but will try to later on.)

So what’s going on here? Is this just a commercial about a well-meaning housewife who wants the best for her kids?

No. Look again.

The woman on the right is worried about the evil looks she’ll get from an older female authority figure (probably her mother-in-law) if her kids don’t look just right for Easter. This commercial isn’t really about what is better for the kids or the family as a whole. It is about women judging and criticizing each other, and women trying to keep other women off their backs.

Not to mention that the whole commercial focuses on fashion, appearance, home, and children.

End reality check.
