Will we ever learn? Will we ever learn that violence accomplishes nothing?
Whether we’re talking about deceased Kansas City Chiefs player Jovan Belcher, or Adam Lanza in Newtown, we’ll just never get it, will we? Then again, a glance at human history shows us how much we love to kill one another.
Oscar Pistorius, also known as the Blade Runner for his amazing accomplishments as a Paralympic athlete, is now the prime suspect in the death of his former girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. Initial reports stated that Pistorius mistook Steenkamp for an intruder. New evidence, however, is showing that Pistorius may have killed Reeva in a violent rage, brought on by her contact with a famous rugby player.
I hope it isn’t true. I really do. It’s a shame to see another life ended over something that could have been fixed so much more easily. People keep saying that Pistorius, like so many other larger-than-life athletes, acted out in rage because he thinks he is entitled to, and will get away with it. Maybe it’s true. Or maybe he really did mistake Reeva for an intruder. I’m going to withhold my judgement until all the facts are out there.
But I just hope that this isn’t another case of the same old, same old.
