I wanted to post this article because I think that it’s direct and honest. And women need to know how to handle their finances and prepare for the future. As my mom put it a long time ago, “Don’t expect Prince Charming to sweep you off your feet someday and solve all of your problems for you. Men come, and they can go – make sure you’re ready to handle whatever comes your way and stand on your own two feet.”
The article points out that indeed, women are paid less than men for a number of reasons. Women often end up as primary caregivers at some point in their lives, whether it is to children, older relatives, or both. Therefore, women opt for careers that provide them with the flexibility to work from home. The downside? A lot of these jobs pay less. Also, the time spent caring for others leads to doubts about their commitment to a career and company, affecting womens’ ability to negotiate for raises and other perks.
The author suggests that home-based businesses are probably the best bet for women who want to have it all. It provides flexibility and the opportunity to pursue an interesting career without sacrificing time spent with family. I think it’s an idea worth considering.
It isn’t to say that there is something wrong with women who want a traditional 9-5, or prefer the corporate ladder to bottles and diapers. Far from it! But it’s important to recognize the reality we live in and have realistic, practical options available to us.
