Pentagon Lifts Ban On Women In Combat

In a bold move, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta will allow women to serve in combat.

Some say the decision has been made to reflect the reality on the ground, as many women are exposed to combat. However, due to a 1994 rule restricting women from these roles, their efforts and contributions have not been fully recognized. Female service members have even sued for the right to serve in combat, because doing so is often crucial to advance one’s career in the military.

Some think that a few Republican lawmakers will try to thwart Panetta’s measure, but it seems to have bipartisan support.

I applaud Panetta’s decision. Many women risk their lives serving this country, and deserve recognition for it. Their contributions are not less valuable than men’s. I also believe that this is brings us a step closer to true equality with men.
