The title is a bit harsh, but this is a great article on the way stereotypes of women in the media affect men and their perception of women.
I think the most relevant argument they bring up is the first one, that men are taught from a young age that they are “entitled” to a beautiful woman because of their repeated exposure to this concept. This quote from the article sums it up very well: “We were told this by every movie, TV show, novel, comic book, video game and song we encountered. When the Karate Kid wins the tournament, his prize is a trophy and Elisabeth Shue. Neo saves the world and is awarded Trinity. Marty McFly gets his dream girl, John McClane gets his ex-wife back, Keanu “Speed” Reeves gets Sandra Bullock, Shia LaBeouf gets Megan Fox in Transformers, Iron Man gets Pepper Potts, the hero in Avatar gets the hottest Na’vi, Shrek gets Fiona, Bill Murray gets Sigourney Weaver in Ghostbusters, Frodo gets Sam, WALL-Egets EVE … and so on…If the hero accomplishes his goals, he is awarded his favorite female.”
The article goes on to state that the female “trophies” don’t put up much of a fight, and don’t have a say in the matter – they simply go along with being scooped up by the Alpha Male of the story.
I don’t think you need a PhD in Gender Studies to realize the implications here. Men are encouraged to hold a false sense of entitlement, and believe that an attractive, obedient woman is their reward for….well, just being alive! Women are objectified and trivialized, their lives, feelings, and accomplishments ignored.
I bet a lot of women reading this are nodding their heads in agreement – I see you doing it! (JK!)
How many times have you told a man “Thanks, but no thanks” for his dinner offer, and seen how angry and resentful he gets. How dare this FEMALE reject me! She should be grateful that she had the opportunity to go out with ME. Who does she think she is?
Ok, maybe I’m exaggerating, but I think most of us have seen this reaction a time or two.
SIGH……Women who don’t conform obviously don’t know their place! Or do they…… ; )
